VICARD THROUGH THE YEARS
 


Driven by a passion for the cooperage trade, the Vicard family has developed a major production facility combining technological innovation and mastery of all the traditional expertise involved in this craft.
 
Vicard offers unique products (barrels, tanks and/or casks) that meet all the oenological requirements of the winemaking process.

Several key dates have marked the decisive changes which have made Tonnellerie Vicard one of the world leaders in its field:

1925
Paul Vicard (Jean’s father) starts up Tonnellerie Vicard in a small workshop in the centre of Cognac, producing around ten barrels a day.

1965
Jean Vicard wins the title of “Best Craftsman in France”.

1968
'Vicard père et fils' cooperage founded.

1970
Jean Vicard decides to invest in some land outside the town centre. 
The first buildings are constructed, offering production capacity of 35 barrels a day and a storage area of three hectares for wood drying.

1976
Vicard exports its first barrels (Italy, Greece, Germany). 
Start-up of production of the 225-litre 'Bordeaux Transport' and 'Bordeaux Ferré' barrels.
Production grows to 60 barrels a day.

1985
A network of export agents is gradually built in the USA, Australia and South Africa.

1987
Jean-Charles Vicard joins the company.

1990
Creation of a new 'Wood Preparation' workshop to separate machining from manufacture.
Production increases, reaching 100 barrels per day.

1994
ISO 9002 Certification guaranteeing the quality of production and robust organization.
Jean-Louis Vicard joins the company. 
Set-up of the first organoleptic analysis protocols.

1995
Creation of the Merrains de France staveyard in Moselle, and beginning of the self-procurement strategy.

1996
Set-up of Tonnellerie Cadus in Burgundy.
Creation of a wood yard on the Cadus cooperage site in order to study the impact of different climates on the seasoning of staves.

1997
The Vicard Group is founded.
Set-up of the first toast workshop using highly developed technology, including an automated fuel transfer system.

1999
Research into a new machining and assembly processes, leading to the filing of an “Enveloppe Soleau” (similar to a patent) for the Bouvetage des Fonds technique, a slot-saw assembly of cask bottoms.

2000
Validation at European level of the 'Self-tightening slot saw assembly’ patent.
Digital technology for the Wood Preparation workshop.
Construction of the log storage platform for Merrain de Cognac and Merrain de France.

2005
Global reorganization of the production site. Set-up of the high-technology toast system.

2009
VICARD is the largest single-site cooperage in France, stretching over twelve hectares including a 6-hectare wood yard.
Project to extend the wood yard by two hectares.
Toast workshop 100% computerized.
The cooperage now produces more than 300 barrels a day.

2013
