Recommendations
For first-time use and storage of barrels
To reap the full benefits of VICARD products, we recommend following this practical advice prior to using the barrels for the first time. Taking these precautions will ensure that your barrels satisfy your expectations.
Storage
If the barrels are not used immediately following reception, it is essential to ensure a specific type of storage.
To avoid the deterioration of the barrels quality, we recommend following these instructions regardless of storage time:
- Ensure that your barrels are kept in their original packaging, designed to protect them (plastic film and cardboard).
- Store them in a location at a temperature of less than 20°C and relative humidity of the air of 70% to maintain the humidity of the wood.
Recommendations for first-time use
Shipping and prolonged storage can result in dehydration. Wood is a living material and under certain conditions (heat, dry air and drafts) its humidity level may vary.
Filling your Vicard barrels with water before use will ensure their quality.
With hot water :
1) Position the barrel vertically and pour 20 litres of 75 to 90°C non-chlorinated hot water.
2) Plug the bung and shake the barrel for a few minutes.
3) Set the barrel on one of its heads for four hours.
4) Turn over the barrel and position it on its other head for four hours.
5) Drip-dry the barrel, bung facing downward.
If any leaks appear and continue after these operations, please contact us.
With cold water :
1) Position the barrel horizontally, bung facing up, and fill it with non-chlorinated cold water.
2) Plug the bung and leave it filled for 24 hours.
3) Drip-dry barrel, bung facing downward.
If any leaks appear and continue after these operations, please contact us.
